The Black Heritage Cultural Experience
The Black Heritage Cultural Experience, open to UCSB Black-identified undergraduates, will allow students to delve deeply into some of the most poignant chapters of Black history in the U.S., including antebellum slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and the long Civil Rights Movement. By providing students with first-hand exposure to specific historic sites, memorials, and communities in the South, the Black Heritage Cultural Experience will serve to reinforce the learning objectives of Black Studies courses. Over the course of 10 days, students will meet various community leaders, be introduced to Black sacred spaces, and reflect on the breadth and diversity of African Americans and their historic struggles to overcome marginalization and achieve justice and equality. Students will reflect on the connection between these problems and the historic inequities discussed in their Black Studies courses—inequities that persist to this day, albeit in different manifestations.
Once you will apply you will hear back from the application committee by Friday, November 15, 2024.
