Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s National History
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the Campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908. It is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women. AKA Sorority consists of 114,000 Active Members (Nationally) / 355,000 initiated members worldwide, located in 12 Countries - United States, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Dubai, Germany, Japan, Liberia, Nigeria, South Korea, South Africa and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Mission
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s mission is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of “Service to All Mankind."
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded on a mission of five basic tenets that have remained unchanged since the sorority’s inception. Our mission is:
- to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards,
- to promote unity and friendship among college women,
- to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature,
- to maintain a progressive interest in college life,
- and to be of “Service to All Mankind.”
Nu Nu Chapter
The undergraduate Nu Nu Chapter supervised by Xi Kappa Omega is located on the University of California @ Santa Barbara campus and was chartered by 15 members in June 1980. Nu Nu Chapter embraces the international theme and the organization's Six initiatives:
Strengthen Our Sisterhood serves as the 2022-2026 administration’s “Foundation Initiative” to strengthen bonds and support the service mission.
The remaining five Program Initiatives are:
- Empower Our Families
- Build Our Economic Wealth
- Enhance Our Environment
- Advocate for Social Justice
- Uplift Our Local Community
